The Norwegian Humans Rights Fund

Support to other Countries

Support to other Countries

The majority of the NHRF funds are granted to projects in a selection of prioritised countries, which currently include Colombia, India, Liberia and Pakistan. In 2012, the NHRF will also support projects in Mexico and Lebanon.

In order to ensure continued flexibility and relevance of the funding scheme, a small number of grants are approved to projects in other countries. Geographical exceptions are made for projects focusing on the protection of human rights defenders and projects forwarded by NHRF owner organisations or observers.

During the last three years, the NHRF has supported organisations carrying out human rights work in South Africa, Uganda, Thailand, Bangladesh, Belarus, Ecuador, Ghana, the Palestinian territories, Sierra Leone, Nepal, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. Until 2010, Uganda and Zimbabwe were prioritised countries for the NHRF. Peru was phased out as a prioritised country in 2011.

The projects have focused on various rights issues, including housing rights, the protection of human rights defenders, sexual minority rights, the right to food, women’s rights, the rights of disabled and youth rights.
