Liberia has been a priority country for the NHRF since 2002, although several human rights projects have been supported since 1996. The legacy of a political system based on exclusion and two brutal civil wars (1989 – 2003) have led to grave human rights violations in the country. With international assistance Liberia has stabilised and is making considerable progress. Still, access to justice is limited and progressive laws, such as laws combating gender-based violence, lack implementation. The NHRF’s priorities have therefore been projects focusing of women’s rights, access to justice, and human rights education.
