India has been a priority country for the NHRF since 2002, but the NHRF has supported organisations and projects in the southern part of India for several years previous to 2002. India is the world’s largest democracy, however, many rights guaranteed by law are not properly implemented and human rights violations and discrimination are rampant. NHRF’s priority areas have been rights for the most vulnerable, such as the Dalits (or the so called “untouchables”). The NHRF supports organisations with a clear strategy of advocacy with focus on civil, social and economical rights and access to justice in the Southern part of India in Tamil Nadu, Karnataka and Andra Pradesh.
