The Norwegian Human Rights Fund’s mandate is to protect and promote human rights internationally by providing direct support to local groups working for the protection and promotion of human rights.
During more than 20 years of existence, the NHRF has given support to projects focusing on a wide range of topics, such as indigenous people demanding recognition and their rights as citizens, monitoring and documenting of abuses in conflict areas, protection of those working in the frontline for human rights, and to demands for access to basic human needs for the poor, such as water, food, protection and housing. Supporting the NHRF means supporting women’s rights for protection against violence, workers’ rights to proper salaries and humane working conditions, legal assistance and access to justice.
The NHRF supports groups working in their own communities who achieve important results by challenging discriminating structures based on small economic grants. Priority is given to poor and marginalised groups that mobilise and demand their own rights. We believe that people working in their own community, and on their own terms, have the opportunity to promote sustainable change with increased respect for the rights of marginalised groups.
